Ella Minnow Pea
Mark Dunn
⭐⭐⭐⭐
dystopian ・ classic ・happy ending
When I received a copy of Mark Dunn's "Ella Minnow Pea" that I had been asking for since I heard about it on Pinterest, one of those obnoxious quotes on the front- usually by a magazine or business bragging about a book- actually caught my eye. "There's a whiff of a classic about Ella Minnow Pea." - The Christian Science Monitor. "Great", I think. "This is going to be like one of those books my 8th grade English teacher assigned that have so many odd references and old diction that I'll be lost." Well, I was right in a way. It is very much a classic in my eyes. It also has vocabulary and writing that makes you think harder than any old novel. It's also like a book I would be assigned in class... but instead of stubbornly annotating, I slowly fell in love. This is a new favorite that I recommend to all readers out there. It is the first book I've read that I can confidently proclaim: the plot was good, the message was great, but the writing was out of this world. Dunn exhibited pure genius in his novel, as you will come to realize especially towards the end of the book, when he manages to carry on a novel with the use of only half the alphabet. I urge you to pick up this book at your next opportunity and really appreciate all that Ella Minnow Pea has to offer.
Recommended for: people with an appreciation for language and communication, those who like classic novels, dystopian totalitarian fanatics
